Just as the author of this article claims, I also see tons of men in my practice. In many ways, I am presently surprised to see men taking action towards their future success. Men that come to see me are facing their weaknesses and that is probably the bravest thing anyone can do. Counseling can be scary for men, as our society tends to label any self-reflection/ examination as “weak”. Men bare a lot of burdens and our society often encourages them to “go-it-alone”. Traditionally men have often been held to a high standard of being the breadwinners, being the leaders, and supporting their spouses and children in a variety of ways. However, there haven’t been many support networks for them. Counseling can offer that venue to those that are willing and courageous enough to take that step.
